Freelance Web Content Copywriting Services
Our Steps for Creating Web Content
At Norton Writing Services, we understand that writing
for the web is different than writing for print. We always follow
these useful steps when creating web content for our clients.
What is our philosophy on web content copywriting?
Step 1- Know who you want to reach and why.
It is important to know who you want to target and what you want
them to know. Be specific. Being too general can create content
that's hard to follow or inappropriate.
Step 2- Make the Information Easy to Find.
Place important information in headlines. Since
most readers scan for information, place the important information
in headlines.
Use bullet points. Bullets help break down information
into chunks and makes web content easy to scan.
Use an inverted structure. Instead of a traditional
structure that builds to the point, start with point and give
the details afterward.
Step 3- Compose Easy to Read Content.
Write short sentences. Complex sentences tend
to bog the reader down. Typically, you want the sentences to
be two lines or less.
Create short paragraphs. Paragraph that are
four to six sentences long are best.
Choose a simple font. Fancy fonts distract the
reader as do words in all caps.
Use a simple reading level. Aim for a seventh
grade reading level. The only exception would be a website tailored
for an academic audience.
Step 4- Keep the Page Format Plain
One idea per page. Avoid making readers scroll
or follow links to continue reading. Place one idea on each
page.
Avoid busy pages. Too many graphics will distract
the reader.
Set a word limit. A 400-500 word limit for
each page works best.
Step 5- Help the Reader Navigate the Content.
Make the menus simple. Use basic words in
the menu and don't use graphical links.
Let headlines help you transition thoughts.
Use the headlines as stepping stones to get through the message.
Ask questions, create steps, or outline the information.
